In these
current times, it feels as though it's becoming a regular occurrence to wake up
to headlines in the news that make you want to hide under your covers and avoid
ever leaving the house. In the midst of the brokenness, it makes you want to scream
"is there any good left in the world?!".
After yet
another terror attack in the UK, I had the urge to write a blog to try and help
remind everyone of the good things we do still have. I've put together 8 points
I feel are important to remember but there are so many more. In a world full of
so much hate we must stand together.
1. The
ability to travel the world. All you have to do is book a flight and a place to
stay and you can travel wherever you want in this world. We're no longer forced
to stay in one place, we can experience different cultures, different
cuisines, and different climates. This is something we're truly blessed to be
able to do and the fact that it's achievable for most of us is even more
special.
2. Kind
people. All we see on the news are crimes committed by nasty, vicious people
which makes it hard to remember the good ones. I can count at least 10
genuinely good people in my life who love and care about me, and I know I won't
be alone. Remember those kind people, and remember to be one yourself. In the
light of terror, it's always the noble people who shine through; the doctors, the
paramedics, the police, and those people who risk their own lives in order to help
others.
3. Freedom
of speech. How amazing is it that we have the freedom to say exactly how we
feel; we have the right to an opinion, the ability to vote and the power to
express our emotions. In many countries, this isn't possible so we must use our voices to speak kindly to one another and communicate our thoughts and
feelings in a positive way.
4.
Reproduction. What a beautiful world we live in where nearly every person has
the potential to reproduce, whether it's naturally, through IVF or a surrogate,
so many of us now have the opportunity to experience what it is to be a parent.
That feeling of unconditional love is open to a huge amount of us and although
it may not always be easy and it can cost, it's still possible.
5. The
ability to move. Being able to use our limbs to move isn't possible for
everyone, we lucky ones must remember how incredible it is. Our bodies allow us
to walk, run, swim, lift weights and just simply take us from a to b. Something
which is greatly underused and also underrated. We forget how amazing our
bodies actually are and how they're something to be cherished.
6. Education.
As a nation, we have the accessibility to broaden our knowledge and educate
ourselves. We can study, at school, college, or university and learn about any
subject we find
an interest in. Not everyone in the world has
this luxury and yet it's so valuable.
7. Access to
health care. In the UK we are blessed to be able to walk into a hospital or
into a doctor's surgery and receive free medical help. No matter how big or
small your problem you can and will receive exceptional help. In other
countries it isn't often accessible or affordable, we should be extremely
grateful.
8. Love. How beautiful
is it that we can experience love? You can be unemployed, poor, or unwell but
if you can feel love then you can survive. Love is the most extraordinary
feeling and it can be felt in so many different forms; friendship,
relationships, companionship, and of course family. In the end, love is the most
important thing there is and even if you only have one person who loves you,
you're extremely lucky.
Ending on the
subject of love seemed the only way appropriate since it's exactly what the
world needs more of right now. Make sure you spread love as far and wide as
you physically can. Be kind to EVERYONE and stick together as a community. Stay
strong, stay hopeful and re-read this if you ever need to remember why.
